I’m not going anywhere. Besides, I know this city better than anyone. If anyone can figure a way out of this, it’s me. I need to do this myself.
Just in case you’ve missed the exciting news, the amazing international pre-order campaign for M.K. England’s sophmore novel, Spellhacker, was revealed on Monday! I’m ridiculously excited to be part of helping spread this reveal far and wide—almost as excited as I am to read Spellhacker!
I’ve also decided to celebrate this announcement by doing what I do best: another Look Book!
THE BOOK:
Spellhacker — M.K. England
Signed copies can be pre-ordered exclusively from Fountain Bookstore!
A lovable band of misfits? Check. High-tech magic? Check. Last heist ever? . . . Try again. Packed with high-stakes action, humor, and hijinks, this genre-bending YA fantasy from the author of The Disasters is perfect for fans of Marie Lu and Amie Kaufman.
In Kyrkarta, magic—better known as maz—was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that’s tightly controlled—and, of course, outrageously expensive.
Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever. But when their plan (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world. No pressure.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from the publisher, but you don’t need luck to participate in the pre-order campaign! All you need to do is submit the following information to mkenglandbooks [at] gmail [dot] com before 11:59PM EST on January 27, 2020:
- Name
- Valid Mailing Address
- Proof of Purchase OR Proof of Library Purchase Request
It’s that easy! And did I mention it’s open internationally? I did? Oh well, it bears repeating! Again, you can find all the details about the pre-order campaign here!
Now, I’m sure you’re wondering what this amazing campaign entails, and I can tell you about that, too! Let me just say, there is a lot and it’s all amazing!
Everyone—yes, everyone!—who places a pre-order or library request for Spellhacker will receive:
-
- a bookmark
- TWO stickers
- a signed bookplate
- a postcard
- an emailed PDF with a printable Spellhacker themed card (if you’re gifting the book and pre-order goodies to someone else!)
- a Disasters short story (to be delivered by email on December 17 when The Disasters paperback releases)
But wait, that’s not all! There will also be THREE grand-prize winners, and they will each receive the following:
-
- everything listed above (the pre-order goodies for everyone!)
- a 30-minute Skype conversation with M.K. England to get writing/industry/librarian coaching or to discuss Spellhacker
- a small piece of art by M.K. England
- a handwritten letter
- annotations and secrets about Spellhacker
You are also eligible to receive just the digital Disasters short story if you submit proof of purchase for a paperback edition of The Disasters, or submit proof of purchase for the hardcover edition (purchased after November 25, 2019).
So, if you’ve already pre-ordered Spellhacker, be sure to submit that receipt! If you’re thinking about pre-ordering or requesting that your local library purchase a copy, I highly recommend doing that before January 27, 2020 (as of today, that means you have two more months!).
Also, can we take a moment to appreciate how awesome the cover for Spellhacker is?! I’m obsessed with the typography and treatment of the title, and I couldn’t let one of my favourite colour palettes go without letting the cover inspire a little something more…
THE LOOK:
Blue, purple, and yellow is one of my favourite colour combinations. I love the mix of warm and cool tones (and of course it helps when the colours compliment each other so well). I let these colours from the cover inspire my look.
Once again, and suprising no one, I’m back on my monochromatic Colourpop palette bullsh*t, and proud of it! I honestly just love these palettes so much, and when they match the colours in a cover so well, how could I not use them?
And so, I present my Spellhacker inspired Look Book!
I used “Starry Eyed” and “Fine China” on my outer lid and brow bone. “Clued In” went in the outer V, and “Lumi” in my tearduct area for highlighting. The rest of my lid is covered in a combination of “Oh Beehave” and “Sweet Spot,” as well as a very liberal application of “Palooza.” “Palooza” has also been used on my brow bone, waterline, and cheek bone. Beneath my eye I’ve used “Fan Fiction” and “Chick Lit,” with a spattering of “Do or Dough.”
I finished my eyes off with Colourpop’s “Numero Uno” liquid liner and NYX’s “Blue” colour mascara, as well as applying Colourpop’s “Punch Line” crème gel liner along my waterline (and it really pops when my eyes are open). My lip is Colourpop’s “Lemon Drop” ultra matte from their limited edition My Little Pony collection.
Bonus Outtake:
I actually did an entire other look at first, only to realize as I started taking photographs that the yellows were way too green on camera, and the whole look didn’t quite reflect the colours on the cover. So, I washed it all off and started over! But, here it is anyways. I’ve also grown perpetually unsure of how I feel about Hard Candy’s “Sky’s the Limit” lipstick in photographs…
And that’s that for my Spellhacker Look Book! It gave me more trouble than some previous looks, but it came together in the end. Going forward, I’m going to start playing around with more experimental and editorial looks, too. I’m currently brainstorming a look that’s going to involve (almost) only eyeliner!

I love the make-up! I love bright colors like that, but I never feel comfortable even trying them out. I’m not very good with it and I end up looking freakish. You look great with the colors though!

Thank you! 💛 My day-to-day looks aren’t usually quiiiiite this vibrant, and I tend to keep them more on the monochromatic, less dramatic side. But these book-inspired looks are the perfect excuse to go a little overboard, and play with the colours I might not usually use otherwise!

It’s really fun! I think it would be great for a night out at a club or to a concert. 🙂
